Prophesied Ones Star in Dolce & Gabbana’s New Campaign for “The One”

Famous faces have notably been paired with commercial fragrances, but none has seemed more appropriate or as timely as Dolce & Gabbana’s recently released campaign for “The One”. The fall 2017 fragrance campaign, starring Game of Throne’s Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke, features these undisputed stars of HBO’s most popular show in a series of commercials that are joyful and full of life – a common theme coming from the famous fashion house.

But what makes this campaign such a standout is the impeccable timing of the rollout. Game of Thrones fans the world over rejoiced when, at the end of season 7 (which ran in August of 2017) the 2 characters, known as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, finally locked as one in a steamy and romantic scene. This scene set fire to GOT fans the world over and created an upwelling of theories and excitement for the upcoming season. This final season won’t begin again until late 2018 or early 2019. So, this commercial teaser of the two, starring side by side again, especially so soon after the last season has ended, is just what Game of Throne fans are hungry for! Not only are the stars two of the most popular actors at the moment, but the fragrance’s title, “The One”, is so specifically perfect for these two characters in the series’ storyline.

As written in the series, the characters played by Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke are both speculated to be prophesized to be “The One Who Was Promised”. As the series explains it, there is a Prince or Princess who has been promised to save their world. Since the ancient language has been lost to translation over the years, it is unclear which of them is truly “The One”! As the next season is scheduled to be the last, fans will finally find out who “The One” really is. In the meantime, Dolce & Gabbana has the great pleasure to feature the two co-sponsors for the fragrance up until – or even after – those details of the series are revealed!

It’s unclear yet what the entire campaign will reveal, but in the first two commercials, the stars were filmed separately. Harrington, as the spokesmodel for “The One” for men and Clarke, as the spokeswoman for the women’s eau de toilette, were both filmed in contemporary Dolce & Gabbana style. The fashion house has evoked the spirit of Italy, of family and of community in many of their campaigns over the last few years for both fragrance and clothing alike.

Both Harington and Clarke are filmed in the streets of Naples singing, dancing and eating with the locals. They twirl in the late afternoon sunshine surrounded by music and heritage. It is clear that the campaign hopes to evoke the sense that these two, although separate, are the “ones” the locals fawn over. Albeit a different spirit, the idea that these two characters again play such pinnacle roles as “chosen ones” is a great testament to the brand for utilizing such popular, modern day characters for their campaign.

Dolce & Gabbana, for certain, is no stranger to well-placed and enduring fragrance campaigns. In 2001, the designers introduced Light Blue, a bright and beaming fragrance that has since been released as a Men’s cologne in 2008 and undergone several iterations in limited-edition collections. It is still one of the most popular fragrances sold today. Part of the popularity was due to the racy campaign, featuring tanned models on the shores of Capri, clad in tiny white swim suits. The Mediterranean spirit of both the fragrance and the campaign is believed to have helped this line remain so popular today.

“The One” seems destined for a similarly popular fate. With these characters and real-life mega celebrities at the helm of this already popular fragrance, there is so much opportunity to keep it at the forefront of consumer’s minds. And since the collaboration is still in its infancy, there is excitement amongst fans as to what the fashion house will do with them, possibly together, in future campaigns!
